Guidance
The area of each rectangle represents the number of exam entries for the selected pupil type, school type and year(s).
There are three levels of hierarchy: (i) STEM/non-STEM category, (ii) Key Stage 5 qualification and (iii) Sector Subject Area. Click on any area to zoom in for more detail; click on the grey bar at the top to zoom out again.
Occasionally, adjacent areas may be allocated the same colour, making them difficult to distinguish. Selecting a different colour scheme will usually fix this.
You may notice some unexpected combinations of Sector Subject Area and STEM classification. These counterintuitive combinations exist because of the way qualifications were classified as science, technology, engineering, maths or non-STEM. The team behind SEEdash (with the help of subject specialists) classified qualifications based on an evaluation of whether the majority of the subject content was science, technology, engineering, maths or non-STEM. The Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications was used to assess the module content of qualifications. For example, a number of geology qualifications are included in the 'Science' sector subject area. However, they were classified by the SEEdash team as non-STEM due to their containing a minority of science content. Conversely, some qualifications included in the 'Leisure, travel and tourism' sector subject area are classified as science, rather than non-STEM. Such qualifications include physical education A-levels and BTECs in sport and exercise sciences.
